Three Rules is a captivating and unforgettable story. The writing is exceptional. From the first pages, I was thrust into the story looking at the world through the eyes of Hope, the book’s main character. I loved the opening funeral scene. Surrounded by a cadre of grief-stricken family members, Hope has no sorrow or tears for the death of Lucas Wellman, the man who sexually abused her. When funeral goers come to Hope’s parents’ house, they’re celebrating Lucas’s life but she’s celebrating freedom.

This is the first novel I’ve ever read with a theme of child sexual abuse, obviously it is a difficult subject. My initial concerns were allayed when I read in the author’s note that the book did not contain graphic scenes depicting sexual abuse. The author handled the issue with the utmost subtlety and discretion, and in doing so, only ramped up the intensity of the drama.

All of the characters are well-developed, but it is Hope who commands our full attention. She studies herself in a family photo, she’s wearing a pretty pink dress, everything is perfect, but her eyes give her away. “I recognize the hopelessness in those pale blue eyes. They’re blank. I’m lost, and no one knows I’m missing.” Plagued by fears, guilt and nightmares, Hope masquerades as a “normal” person with her parents and friends. But there are cracks in the wall she has meticulously constructed to hide her terrible secret. On the stairs she straightens a photo on the wall, then straightens it again until she’s sure it’s even with the rest of them. A few minutes later she is smoothing “all the wrinkles” out of the coverlet on her bed. She is consumed by the abuse she has suffered, and these small acts belie her well-controlled but inwardly careening emotions. I have never fully understood why abuse victims remain quiet but I do after reading this book.

I enjoyed the story of Hope and Joey’s relationship and mysteries that swirl around them.

Three Rules is a terrific read, but it is sobering to think that the brilliant depiction of Hope’s character and trauma was at least partially based on the author’s own experience with abuse. I greatly admire Marie Drake for her courage and advocacy in writing this book.

This book is sometimes disturbing, sometimes uplifting, and riveting from cover to cover. I do not know what genre to categorize the book. It is a mystery, a romance, action, and a heart tugger. The main protagonist--Hope--is easy to like, the supporting characters are painted so clearly I could see their faces, and the antagonist is just plain gross. Hope struggles with demons from her past throughout the book. There were plot twists that kept me revising my expectations of the ending throughout. Subtle clues that were easy to miss, made me return to previous passages, several times. I don't think they were underwritten, just put there to keep you guessing. The ending is so fulfilling that you should not do the old "sneak a peek." It is said that authors put something of themselves into their books; with this book I hope that is untrue,as will you if you read it.
I will call this book--Disturbingly Interesting. I think it will-comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable.
I do not offer reviews for books I don't finish. If I finish them, they deserve 3* for holding my attention. Marie Drake drew my attention, and held it tight with this book. If I could add another star I would! If this book makes you feel uncomfortable (for personal reasons) you should definitely not stop reading! A wonderful tale I highly recommend. 5* pulse 1* for being so unique!
“You will never understand…”
For a victim of abuse, those words have more meaning than the protected shall ever know. As I read this book, it became easy to get lost in the original storyline and the developing characters. The author writes with such color and description that the reader can ignore what is really happening under the surface, and simply enjoy a well written story of survival. Most readers will be thankful for this. Most readers will appreciate the walls that the author puts up, so that outsiders can experience the story and not feel too…uncomfortable. The reader is protected, page by page, and most will not even realize it. Frankly, I think the only readers who will see through the shutters, are those that have been through it themselves. You see, this is what we do.
Survivors of abuse have an open wound. It may stop bleeding after several years, but it will never truly heal. It will also never show, not if we can help it. Survivors like us take a sort of personal pride in not allowing others to see behind the curtain. The wound is personal. It isn’t the topic of discussion at the cocktail party or backyard barbeque. We minimalize it, at every turn, because we must. The author is doing this throughout the entire novel, and readers are thanking her for it. The author tells the story from behind her own curtain, only peeking her head out for brief moments, on periodic occasions. The author shows us just enough to give the readers the idea of what took place, without forcing us to face what nobody really wants to see. That’s how we tend to run our lives as well. We make sure that the people we care about are taken care of, in a way that we were not. We don’t allow those special people in our lives to feel any of the discomfort that we have had to endure, because we know how horrible the pain really is. This story itself is a vessel of expression, of an attempt to further a healing that will always be a work in progress.
This author is incredibly brave. Not for simply writing about this topic, or for fashioning a very impressive book around it. This author has my respect for trying to break out of the prison that survivors ultimately fashion around themselves. The main character isn’t just dealing with what has happened, she is trying to actually explain it to the people around her. This is the hardest thing that victims of abuse will ever attempt to do. The plot of the story, the twists and turns, the suspense that is created, all leads to the final exasperated pronouncement, throughout the story and at the end that “you will never understand.”
As a father, the fact that I had tears in my eyes on numerous occasions while reading this comes as no surprise. As a parent, especially as a survivor who is now a parent, there is nothing that you fear more than something like this happening to your child. When I finished reading this, I sat with my youngest son on the couch for about an hour, watching him sleep, thinking about the words I had just read. I was unsettled, and fascinated at the same time. The author still hasn’t let me go, and I finished the book hours ago. If you have never experienced this yourself, and I pray that you haven’t, enjoy the artistic gift that you have in your hands. Experience this book for the great story that it is, and admire the author for writing it. When you’re done, I hope that you can feel grateful for the fact that you can simply put down the book, turn on the television, and move on. If you are one of the many survivors out there, take this rare opportunity to reopen the wound, just for a moment, and take the authors advice. Like I said before, these wounds never truly heal. But there is always a chance that it won’t hurt as bad, tomorrow.
