Being Here Barry Jonsberg Books

I just finished reading Barry Jonsberg's latest book, Being Here, and it had a wonderful premise, but in the end, it left me feeling somewhat confused and uncertain. It is never explained whether or not Leah is being truthful in her storytelling, but rather it is implied that the 93 year old Leah Cartwright has an imaginative mind, and is a great storyteller. Therefore, we never quite can tell if the story she is telling to sixteen year old Carly is truth or fable. The book is said to be about love and a unique friendship. Guess what? The friendship is with an imaginary friend named Adam. Now how can you truly experience real love if it's only imaginary? It is possible to fantasize and imagine what it may be like, but it is not love in a physical sense. So here we have a 93 year old virgin who sacrifices having a relationship with a real living being because her religious, fanatic mother brainwashed her to believe that love in the flesh is the work of the Devil. How sad is that??? Now she is on her death bed, and the only consolation she has is that she will be reunited with her imaginary lover, Adam. Oh, and to further glorify this poor woman's existence, she spends the next forty years after her mother's death working as a librarian until she is replaced by computers, technology and e-books!

With all that said, Being Here was well written, and it was a fast read. It dealt with the real issue of trauma and abuse of a young child. However, I could not help feeling somewhat disappointed at the end of the book. I would have liked if Leah really could have found love in the true physical sense rather than the imaginative one created in her mind. It just seems like a hopelessly sad existence, and the story lacks a bit of realism.

I gave this book three stars because it was written beautifully, and it kept me intrigued until the end. I think it can be a worthwhile read for some because it is multifaceted in that it deals with love, faith and the consequences resulting from the choices one makes in life. In this sense, this book has issues that people can relate to, which in turn, saves this novel from being a total disappointment.
