First of all, I agree with the reviewer Hredzak about the book jacket's misleading description. This is NOT a story about revenge in any way. It is about cutting out the negativity and finding you in the process, at least in Mia's case being more comfortable with herself.

I LOVED the fact that we had a lead who was larger in body, very different from the usual perfect bodied femme that we usually see. My only issue was the constant self-deprecating behavior of our lead Mia. This was largely due to the first person narrative, and her views being all we heard. Yes, clearly she had body image issues from mom here, but Mia was down on herself A LOT and was likely more sexy and beautiful than described.

This book had its funny moments and is very honestly written, but with an undercurrent of sadness that was part of the realism of the story. This writer clearly does not beat around the bush and I appreciated that.

I really wish we could have gotten Ryan's POV. She was a character I would have liked to hear from, especially when it came down to how SHE saw and felt about Mia. We know that Ryan found her attractive, that was obvious, but actually hearing Ryan's opinion of this voluptuous woman would have been amazing.

The sex is good, the characters clearly have amazing chemistry and the writer makes that known. If we got a peek into Ryan's mind during the love scenes, all the self-deprecating behavior we got from Mia throughout the book would have been worth it, because I'm sure Ryan would have worshiped Mia in her mind and we the reader would have felt it. Mia would have been more redeemed and validated for us in turn, balancing out the negativity Mia felt about herself.

I recommend this book because there is realism here and honesty not typically shown in lesfic romance. It is not your usual escape into a fluffy read. These characters have real issues and horrible things happen to them that the writer explores. Read it because it's honest and takes a different prospective on love and all the stuff we go through to find ourselves and the love we deserve.

Ugly duckling tale of Mia who is overweight, has a girlfriend who abandoned her, but she finds a new love interest and pride in herself.

This is told from Mia's point of view. She has a critical mother who criticizes her about her weight and compares her to her oh so perfect sister. This has resulted in Mia developing a low self-esteem. To add insult to injury, her girlfriend who leaves for a job assignment, and may or may not come back, leaves her mischievous little Chihuahua in Mia's care.

The problem I have with the story from Mia's point of view is that we see Ryan, Mia's love interest, from just one perspective. Though the Ryan we see through Mia's eyes is attractive.

I liked that the story has Mia really working on her self-esteem by taking up running to lose weight. There were also some funny moments relating to the mischievous dog. I liked that the relationship between Mia and Ryan took some time to progress. The sex scenes where restrained.

The editing was good. And the story kept my interests to read at one sitting.

This book is written very well and it's definitely worth a read. Many times it was hard for me to put down and I kept telling myself, "just one more chapter", only to keep going to find out what happened next. I loved the fact that the main character, Mia, is a larger sized love lead who is also non-white. I'm a big fan of diversity in lesfic.

The story is told completely from Mia's perspective, whose inner monologue I found completely authentic, engaging, and amusing. The self-doubt, self-criticism and insecurities all rang true and it was refreshing to see them written in such a way, with both honesty and humor. So many books establishing a character as insecure either don't go as deep or they go too deep to the point of maudlin. I felt Mia's voice had a perfect balance.

The humor in the story is great and, as for the love story, this was a joy to follow, as well. The chemistry is palpable between Mia and Ryan and it's satisfying to see their relationship unfold. For the romance, the author did something incredibly rare in lesfic, she let the characters breathe around each other. The intimacy the characters build is seen just as much in the non-spoken interactions they have as with their conversations. As a reader, that's really fun for me to read. When Mia and Ryan finally come together, the love scene is both intimate and steamy. Very well done. It was especially satisfying that Ryan falls for Mia when she's bigger and feeling her worst. Any inner growth Mia has is motivated within herself rather than pressure to impress, which was also a refreshing angle.

With all of the good this book has, I do have some bittersweet feelings.

I feel that the last third of the book doesn't feel as tight as the rest of it. The book is never slow at all but the first half of the book really takes its time and fills in a lot of character and detail. When we come up on the last 1/3rd of the book, something about it felt more jarring or rushed to wrap things up and, in some ways, made it a bit too tidy. I also wanted a few things fleshed out more, primarily I was hoping for a bigger blow up scene between Brenda and Mia. It's a compliment to the author that I wanted more instead of less.

Overall, this is a really unique and refreshing read and certainly recommend.
