I just finished reading this book for the second time. It is a well-worn copy now, because after I read it the first time, my wife read and loved it, and passed it on to her mother who read and loved it, who passed it on to a friend from whom I had to beg to get it back. This book is hard to put down. And hard to get back if you lend it out! You'll love it.
Enjoyed the book but don't think it lived up to all of the hype.
I loved this book and am in awe at the strength and will of Bubbie! Her courage and perseverance put all of us today to shame! I appreciate the obvious love between heroine and author. I would recommend this to others! Well done.
Wow! An incredible true story about an incredible woman and her family that leaves you inspired. Russel does an amazing job of capturing the emotion and determination of his grandmother as she does whatever she can to keep her family going during a sad and horrific period in world history. The family members are brought to life through Russel's creative style, alternating between historical recounts of Bubbie's efforts to get her and her family to America and the hilarious banter that takes place amongst them while watching Let's Make A Deal and grabbing the last of the whitefish. An amazing story that will leave you inspired. A must read!
Witty, sad, inspirational and wrought with humor, this story of a woman's life, and the effect it had upon a deeply interesting family, brings to life a somewhat familiar holocaust story as seen through an entirely different, new and engaging lens. The attorney turned author (or is it the other way around?) captivates his audience through an almost screenplay-type dialogue (think Hollywood-bound) with wit, humor and a balanced rhythm - this is now on my required reading list for friends and family. This author may have found his true calling. Can't wait to see it make its way to the big screen. Read it. Period.
This is an amazing book that warms the heart. Bubbie is a character that we are all endeared to in one form or another. A strong, stubborn yet amazingly loving individual, Bubbie exemplifies so much of what we love in our more "passionate" friends and relatives. I was lucky to have grown up with my own Bubbie, a woman whose decades old lessons still guide me everyday. The author did a great job of portraying the impact one individual can have on may others. Great Read!
When I read about someone and I wish I could have known them, then that is a real tribute to both the author and the subject. All too often biographical memories are written from a position of pain, but this one describes the life and attitudes that help overcome difficulties with humor, and the naivety of immigrants trying to anticipate what officials are really asking.
