I had never read a Rick Reed novel before, and I chose this one purely from the book description. It sounded a bit on the lighthearted side, and I was not currently in the mood for angst. And it WAS a bit on the lighthearted side, but it had its serious moments as well. Besides the "boy meets boy, boy loses boy, boy gets boy" theme, there was the part about wrestling with "what causes attraction, anyway?"

Caden likes heavy men, but soon after he meets stocky Kevin, his ideal man, he has to leave town for a month for a family matter. Kevin and Caden have only seen each other twice when Caden has to go away and they have not really gotten to know each other very well. Thus, when Caden returns to find that Kevin has dieted down to a fit, slim shape, he is completely taken aback. He never thought of himself as shallow before, but he had been convinced that Kevin was "the one" and now all of sudden, based only on the fact that Kevin has lost weight, he's not so sure.

Caden wants some time to think about the matter but he's not going to be given that luxury: his best friend, Bobby the horndog, is making serious moves on Kevin now that Kevin fits Bobby's physical ideal (F'ing Gorgeous, as Bobby refers to it). All along Caden had been disgusted with Bobby for his shallow behavior towards potential boyfriends, but now Caden sees that he, himself, has been shallow, just in a completely different direction. But what can you do about what attracts you to someone else? You can't just turn it off. Are two "dates" enough to make you realize it's the person you love and not the outer form? Kevin is a great guy, one that any man (or woman) would be very lucky to have as a boyfriend, but how might he have felt if Caden had returned from his trip 40 pounds heavier? He was attracted to Caden for Caden's looks as much as Caden was attracted to Kevin for his extra weight. It's confusing and complicated!

Well, as you can see, there's plenty to think about in this book. And one of the best things about the story is that it continues in Reed's book, Raining Men. In "Raining Men," a MUCH darker story, we find out what happens to Bobby, and whether he can heal the rift between himself and Caden, now his former best friend.

Chaser Rick R Reed 9781613725849 Books Reviews

Loved this book! The characters were well defined and lived within their world. There never was a moment where I "fell" out of the story with a "pfft! character x wouldn't have said/done/reacted like that!"

Much has been made about how shallow Caden was at his dismay over Kevin losing the weight. Umm, the whole tale hangs on body image, and what popular culture demands we should like. At the beginning Caden is embarrassed that he likes beefier guys, rather than the stick thin guys or the gym bunnies that gay culture holds up to the the ideal man. When he lusts after Kevin, it is because of his exterior, but after getting to know him, he falls in love with who Kevin actually is inside.

Lust, and love is coupled with how the person looks, and if we are honest we know this to be true. Is it shallow? In a way, but not really. We like what we like, and who knows how or why that's our ideal.

Several of the reviewers didn't feel the connection between Caden and Kevin, but it was there, they learned who each other was during the time Caden was away from Kevin. I'm wondering if why these reviewers didnt connect with this wonderful book was that it was written by a man, not a woman. I can't abide m/m written by women, to me their writing doesnt ring true, the guys come off way to feminine to be realistic to me. Several of my favorite m/m books have uneven reviews like this one does, and they are all written by men.
This is a tough one to give five stars to because the linchpins to the plot are all so equally out of the blue. It takes a while to adjust to the fact that we have three desperately lonely people on our hands who cannot seem to tell each other the truth when something happens to disrupt the happiest day in each of their lives.

The incongruously named Caden Desarro is a pretty hot 30-something who has this thing for slightly overweight cubby guys whom he can cuddle up to (the euphemism for this is "chubby chaser).. His best friend Bobby is one of the hottest, and most promiscuous, guys in Chicago, but has different tastes, so when they go out together, they rarely set their sights on the same quarry.

One night while Bobby sets off in pursuit of a lust object, Caden stumbles into the men's room in a bar and falls almost instantly in lust with a blondish, bearded, slightly overweight guy, Kevin Dodge. But then Caden screws up the potential encounter so much that it takes a transportation miracle to bring them together. But when they finally get somewhat together, it's explosive and beautiful and your heart will just flutter away.

Then it hits the fan. Contrary to the book's promotion, Caden is called away not on business but because family finally decided to tell him the his mother has suddenly become gravely ill. He leaves for Pittsburgh and is gone for six weeks--keeping in contact with Kevin, who was never told by Caden why he was so attracted to him, physically, in the first place. Kevin can't believe this gorgeous guy likes him, and he has to figure out how to hold on to him.

So, Kevin decides to spruce himself up by going on a diet and joining a gym and leaving how to run, all things he knows Caden is into. Unfortunately, when Caden comes home and Kevin opens the door, it is Stun City--and that shock that Kevin was hoping would light Caden's eyes and other parts turns into an incredible downer that Caden can't wrap his head around, nor even explain.

Needless to say, this all puts a crimp in both their HEA plans, and it becomes more complicated when Bobby steps into the picture, first by accident and then, because he is one of the sneakiest SOBs anyone could possibly want to call a BFF, quite deliberately and viciously.

This mash-up turns into what might seem like a car chase if there were vehicles involved--guys running all over Chicago, away from and trying to catch each other, sneaking into and out of coffee shops and backyards, making life miserable for our two star-crossed lovers. The way it comes to a head and ends is somewhat priceless, but see for yourself--latch on to it.
